The typical approach when shooting macro subjects is to use smaller apertures to maximise the depth of field.

In many situations, even this won’t be enough to get the key details sharp, and you may have to stack several frames that have been focused at different distances.

However, why not try shooting close-ups with the opposite intention?

Use the minimal depth of field offered by wider apertures, close focusing and longer focal lengths to produce images where just a sliver of the subject appears sharp.

For non-moving and slow-moving subjects, we’d recommend using manual focusing and Live View.

If you’re shooting an active subject, you may find it easier to manually select an AF point that will correspond with the part of the subject you want sharp, and then adjusting your position to track that detail.

* The closer an element is to the camera and the greater the separation there is between it and the rest of the subject, the easier it is to use this technique.
* Too much depth of field, and the effect won’t be as strong; too little, and the background may be a blur. Use the DOF preview control to find the sweet spot.
