Best ball head for tripods: 05 3 Legged Thing AirHed 2 Evolution 2

Price: £180, $240
Available in black or blue options, this premium ball head has a 52mm mounting plate and an astonishing 40kg maximum load rating.

That’s despite tipping the scales at just 388g, making it the most lightweight head in the group.

It’s absolutely solid in operation and has a separate panning lock with a calibrated scale. The main locking screw doubles up as an adjustable friction damper.

In a way, you could say that the locking clamp on any ball head gives adjustable friction damping when released only slightly, but the system works very well on the AirHed 2.

There are two spirit levels on the platform, plus a bubble level under the quick-release plate.

Pricy alone, the head is more affordable as part of a complete 3 Legged Thing setup.

Verdict
Pros… 40kg maximum load rating three bubble levels.
Cons… Quick release plate has no D-ring.
WE say… More competitively priced in 3LT tripod kits.
