How to make a fantasy landscape: step 7

    07 Add the main rock
From Mini Bridge drag Fantasy_Start_03.NEF into the open image. As before, the image will open in ACR. Click OK to open it without making any changes. Use the anchor points that surround the image to resize and position, holding down Shift to retain the aspect ratio. Press Enter.

    08 Make a selection
Select the Magic Wand tool (W) and use this to select the white background. Hold down Shift to add to the selection. Once the background is selected use Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+I to invert the selection. Press Q to access Quick Mask mode, choose a black soft-edged brush and paint on the base of the rock image.

How to make a fantasy landscape: step 9

    09 Refine the selection
Hit Q again to create the selection, then press W and click the Refine Edge button. Choose the On Layers View Mode, click Smart Radius and increase the value to around 3, then paint around the edges of the rock to remove the white edges. Click Decontaminate Colors and then click OK to finish.

How to make a fantasy landscape: step 10

    10 Add the other rocks
Use the same process to add the other two rock images. Select the Fantasy_Start_04.NEF layer and press Cmd/Ctrl+J to duplicate the layer. Press V, select the anchor point on the left of the image and drag it over to the right. Adjust the size so that it looks different from the original, then move it into position.

How to make a fantasy landscape: step 11

    11 Blend in the rocks
Click the mask of Fantasy_Start_03.NEF, select a black brush with an Opacity of around 50% and a Fill of around 40%. Make sure the brush size is relatively large and soft, and use this across the bottom of the rock to blend it in with the sea. Once complete, click the mask of the next layer and repeat the process.

How to make a fantasy landscape: step 12

    12 Create the mist
Click back onto the Fantasy_Start_03.NEF layer and click the Create a new layer icon. Select the Gradient tool and select White to Transparent, then in the options select Reflective and set the Opacity to 50%. Click the image just above the base of the main rock and drag down to just below the base.
