Creative Photo Ideas for September: 07 Shoot a portrait that plays with perspective

This is a cheap and cheerful way to get kids interested in photography. Draw out a fantastical scene on an area of tarmac using chalk – get your children or grandchildren to help with the design – and ask them to dress up, lie down and interact with it. Simple.

Your next move will be to find a raised point of view to shoot from (a stepladder will do the job quite nicely) and a standard to wide-angle lens.

Make sure you work fast and constantly encourage your model – show them the results on the back of the camera so that they really get into the swing of it!

It will keep them interested and make it fun too.

Get started today…
* Shoot on bright overcast days when contrast levels will be lower.
* Make a series of test shots so that you can determine the optimum exposure to use in Manual mode (if you rely on autoexposure, the camera meter may over-expose the shot, depending on how dark the background is).
* Instead of drawing directly onto tarmac, consider using a series of black sheets. This will allow you to run through a number of scenes in a short photo session, and will ensure that you’ll get a darker, sharper background to work against.
