Creative Photo Ideas for September: 05 Shoot a summer storm

As far as photography is concerned, a summer thunderstorm can be more spectacular than a winter gale.

The contrast of strong sunshine and black clouds might be a nightmare for your camera’s metering system, but it can bring a dramatic, edge to a sleepy summer scene.

German landscape photographer Tobias Richter had the best of both for this shot..

“I shot this on a hot summer day in Saxon Switzerland National Park, Germany,” says Tobias.

“The weather was constantly shifting between sunlight and thunderstorms with heavy rain. In the evening, I went to a popular viewing point to shoot the sunset. I was lucky.

“The rain weakened and the sun was shining when I arrived at the summit, while mist rose up from the valleys. I used the short gap in the clouds and took some photos of the dramatic scenery while a new thunderstorm cell drew in.

“To balance the difference in contrast between the sky and the landscape I used a 0.6 Lee Grad ND Hard-Grad-Filter, but this was not enough to control the full dynamic range.

“In the end, I had to shoot two different exposures – one for the sunlit, bright areas to the left and a longer exposure for the darker parts of the landscape. At home, I manually blended these two exposures using Photoshop layer masks.”

    Get started today…
    * Pack a set of square ND grad filters in various strengths. The graduation is much easier to position accurately than with circular ND grads.
    * Keep a large plastic bag handy to throw over the camera when the heavens open.
    * Obviously, keep safe and make sure you’re not in an exposed location with a metal tripod during an electric storm…
