Standard, strong Neutral Density filters aren’t just useful for producing smeared skies and milk-smooth seas.

The extended exposure times they create enable you to render distracting moving objects as invisible in the final picture.

French photography duo Lucie & Simon have explored this trait for Silent World, a project that has taken them around the world to capture ghostly urban scenes.

But they don’t simply visit locations at the crack of dawn, when few pedestrians will be around. Instead they get their cameras out at the busiest times of the day.

“We decided to shoot images around midday, in crowded and symbolic places. The idea was to transform these locations into imaginary landscapes where almost all human presence would have disappeared.

“The project is the result of a slow and long process of work. We start scouting the cities for several weeks, finding locations and the viewpoint. Then we shoot the images – usually one a day.

“We can end up returning several times to try out different lighting or weather conditions, or to find someone else to be in the picture. Finally, we spend a week per image on the computer.”

    Get started today…
    * Use a 10-stop Neutral Density filter (a Lee Big Stopper or B+W ND110 for instance) to create the extremely long exposures required here.
    * Download a smartphone app such as NDTimer or NDCalc to help calculate the exposure time.
    * Take a number of different frames. That way, you’ll be able to blend the best elements of each (if, say, a car is stationary in one frame, but moved on in another).
