Many photographers would recoil in horror at the thought of strong sunshine and dense shadows.

But while everyone else is sitting around waiting for the ‘golden hour’, why not exploit the opportunity for shadow photography?

Cities and towns are littered with buildings and street furniture whose photographic potential you might otherwise have dismissed, but which gain depth with the addition of shadows. If you can include a human figure or two, even better.

Photographer Michael Ares saw just such a promising situation developing while out with his Nikon D7000 and 18.0-55.0mm f/3.5-5.6 lens.

“I was walking on a bridge in Whittier, California, when I noticed some shadows caused by palm trees in the late afternoon.
I saw the repetition in the shadows and knew they’d make for an interesting shot if combined with the right character.

I waited half an hour before this cyclist passed through. I quickly took a snap and was pleased with the result.”

Get started today…
* When out shooting in bright light, fit a
lens hood to prevent ghosting and flare
reducing image quality.
* Find a raised point of view to shoot from, enabling you to make shadows more prominent.
* Try underexposing a picture slightly to make the shadows stronger – dial in between -2/3 to -1 2/3 stops of exposure compensation.
* Increase the contrast in post-processing by using Curves in Photoshop.
