Creative Photo Ideas for August: 05 Shoot an abstract reflection

You don’t need to splash out on top-flight kit or travel to a picturesque location to get stuck into abstract photography.

Take Andy Bell’s shots here – one’s a concrete strip on a harbour wall while the other’s a reflection in the corner of a waterlogged car park.

Andy’s photoblog is awash with inspirational abstracts like these, many of which are turned on their heads.

“Reflections work well when flipped as they are usually upside down to start with,” he says. “If you include some non-reflected elements, as in the concrete strip and the yellow lines, then the composition can become more interesting.

“Wind creates many different patterns so waiting for a decent pattern can take time, and calm conditions are usually best.

“Also, with reflections, I find the camera will often autofocus on the surface of the water so you need to readjust the focus onto the reflection.”

Get started today…
* Early morning is a prime time for reflection photography – the sun will be low in the sky and the water’s surface is likely to be at its most calm.
* Don’t overload yourself with gear. A standard zoom or 50mm prime is the perfect lightweight lens to carry around all day.
* Consider taking a telephoto zoom in the 70-200mm range for compressing a scene and cropping tighter in-camera.
