Both the Canon EOS 70D and Nikon D7100 have built-in stereo microphones with adjustable input level and external microphone sockets too – though the EOS 70D lacks a headphone jack for monitoring audio levels, a feature most professionals would require.

Both cameras can shoot 1920 x 1080p full HD movies at a selection of frame rates.

The Canon edges ahead in our EOS 70D vs Nikon D7100 video comparison with its new on-sensor phase-detection autofocus and quiet STM lenses, though this may not be a decisive advantage since many pros tend to focus manually anyway.

The Canon EOS 70D has a 3-inch display with 1040k dots, while the Nikon D7100 goes slightly better at 3.2 inches and 1229k dots.

But this small size advantage is outweighed by the Canon’s multi-angle articulated design and touch-screen control with touch AF.

The extra flexibility gives the Canon EOS 70D a clear advantage here.

But where the Canon EOS 70D’s viewfinder offers 98% coverage, the Nikon D7100’s shows the full 100% image area.

It’s a small difference, but these can add up.
