How famous landscape photographers make money from photography: 7-9
7 Play with a polariser
I frequently shoot a few images with and without a polarising filter in order to illustrate the effect it can have on a scene.
Rotating the polariser to give the maximum effect means the reflections on the surface of the water are removed, revealing the rocks below.
When rotating the outer ring of a circular polarising filter, always turn in clockwise onto the lens.
This way if it grips the inner ring of the filter it will tighten onto the lens rather than unscrewing away from it and becoming loose.
8 Don’t forget your mobile
When I’m searching for locations I often shoot them using my phone. Not only do these pics remind me of possible compositions, but they help me work out how long it takes to walk from one spot to the next – useful to know when the light starts changing.
9 Photograph places of interest
When you think of landscape photography, the chances are you’ll imagine countryside or coastal scenes.
However, images showing buildings and places of interest are required for local interest magazines, tourism departments, picture libraries and other markets.
Photographs of structures like bridges, ruins, churches and other religious buildings can be used in numerous different ways to attract visitors to an area.
If you can photograph them in a different way or in interesting light then it gives your work more chance of being chosen.
