4 Concentrate on details
Landscape photography isn’t just about recording wide-open spaces and sweeping vistas with a wide-angle lens – it can also mean photographing details in the landscape too.
Close-ups and images that show how to record patterns in nature are in demand for photography magazines and calendar companies.
If you’re photographing along the coast, for instance, there are numerous subjects to train your lens on – such as ripples in the sand on the beach and patterns made by seaweed or shells.
Keep your eyes open and you’ll start to spot more possible photographs.
5 Use your wheels!
I often drive to a location in my camper van. Being able to stay in the camper so close to locations means I can be where I need to be in a few minutes and I don’t have to set off any earlier in the morning than I have to.
Using a camper also means I can save money on hotel, youth hostel and bed and breakfast costs and I can cook my own meals when I want to rather than having to eat breakfast at a certain time and paying for meals in pubs and restaurants.
Plus, it means you don’t upset any other guests when you’re up and out when it’s still dark outside!
6 Work with the light
After finding a location, I’ll decide if it’s a dawn or dusk setting depending on whether I want to photograph it bathed in light or with the sun behind it. I try to find locations that are lit from the side as this reveals all the textures and contours.
I don’t like the sun to be shining from behind me as I find the light can be flat and uninteresting. When the light is coming from behind it can cause shadows to fall onto the scene, which unless you want to record your shadow in the photo, isn’t a great idea.
