Are you in love with your EOS camera but stuck in the same features and modes? As part of a new series, every Friday we’ll profile a new EOS camera and offer our best tips for using it in new ways. Some EOS cameras may be current models, some may be classics and others may be long out of date, yet a classic to those who still use them.

Sound good? Good. Now let’s take a closer look at the Canon EOS 500D…

Canon 500D: 5 quick tips for getting more from your EOS camera

So you think you know how to use your Canon 500D? Like many of us, you may have a DSLR or compact system camera but tend to use only a handful of your its features.

In our ongoing review of some of the more popular current and ‘out of date’ Canon cameras, we want to help you better harness the creative potential of your camera.

Call them camera tips, or call it a user’s guide to your favourite Canon camera. The advice below comes from experts who have used the Canon 500D and know this DSLR inside and out.

If you have your own Canon 500D tips you’d like to share, post them in the comments below. What we want to build is an ever-growing user’s guide for the Canon 500D that comes not from a press release or a lab test, but from the photographers who shoot with this DSLR (read more DSLR tips or read about another Canon DSLR).

We want to inspire you to twist the mode dial and move beyond your favourite settings and functions and get more out of your Canon 500D starting today!

Canon EOS 500D tips: Auto ISO

    Tip 1: Auto ISO
As with the 450D, the 500D’s Auto ISO function doesn’t drop below ISO 400 in Manual mode, so you’ll have to select an ISO setting manually. No great shakes – you’re shooting with full manual control after all – although it’s easy to forget to do this!

Canon EOS 500D tips: Flash Off Mode

    Tip 2: Flash off mode
If you regularly shoot in Auto mode but you’re in a location where flash photography is prohibited, turn the shooting mode dial to its Flash off setting. The camera will increase the ISO to compensate for low light, in order to help you get sharp results.

Canon EOS 500D tips: Live View zoom

    Tip 3: Live View zoom
During Live View, you can magnify the image to check for focus before you take the shot. Use the arrow keys to move the white rectangle to any area you want to zoom in on, then press the magnify button to show a 5x view, then a 10x view.

How to choose the right focus mode: AI Servo AF

    Tip 4: Faster AF
The 500D is set to Live mode autofocus as a default. This offers quieter but slower focusing. If you need speed, switch to Quick mode. It is noisier though, as the mirror needs to flip down (and it momentarily blocks your view).

Canon EOS 500D tips: Level horizons

    Tip 5: Level horizons
If you’re shooting with the viewfinder rather than with Live View, you can make sure landscapes are level by lining up the horizon with the edges of the AF points in the centre of the frame.
