How to make money from photography: new series on Digital Camera World
Stock that sells
With millions of images to choose from and hundreds of image libraries supplying them, competition is fierce, but it’s still possible to make a killing on the ‘stock market’.

1 Landscapes
With a collection of just over 2,000 royalty-free images, the iStockphoto-exclusive photographer known simply as ‘AVTG’ has generated in excess of 120,000 sales over the past five years.
This beautifully illuminated woodland scene – known as Autumn Forest – has been paid for almost 4,000 times alone.
2 Portraits
Business-style portraits are always popular for companies looking to produce corporate material, whether it’s a printed brochure or newsletter, or for online publication, especially if there’s space for copy on the image.
This shot has netted photographer Nicole Waring over 10,000 sales in the past two years – up to £50,000!
3 Creative shots
Although this creative water droplet image can be found in iStockphoto’s Dollar Bin, its low price has helped this royalty-free shot to sell over 1,100 times – and all those dollars soon add up!
Had it been on at a royalty-based price, it possibly would never had received such exposure and thus earned less money for the photographer.
