Canon 450D: tips for using your digital camera

Are you a Canon 450D user? So you think you know how to use your Canon DSLR? Like many of us, you may have an EOS camera but tend to use only a handful of its features.

In our ongoing review of some of the more popular current and ‘out of date’ Canon cameras, we want to help you better harness your camera’s creative potential. Call them camera tips, or call it a user’s guide to your favourite Canon DSLR. The advice below comes from experts who have used the Canon 450D and know it inside and out.

If you have your own Canon 450D tips you’d like to share, post them in the comments below – or send them jeff.meyer@futurenet.com. What we want to build is an ever-growing user’s guide of Canon 450D tips that come not from a press release or a lab test, but from the photographers who shoot with this camera.

Ultimately we want to inspire you to twist the mode dial and move beyond your favourite settings and functions and get more out of your Canon 450D starting today! So without further ado…

    Canon 450D Tip 1: Self-timer
To reduce the chances of capturing someone blinking when you’re trying to appear in a group portrait, select the ‘Continuous’ self-timer option and dial in how many frames you want the camera to take once the timer’s run down.

Canon 450D Tip 2: Faster frame rate
If you’re using a high ISO setting to photograph sports or action and you find that the camera’s stuttering when taking bursts of shots, go to Custom Function II: 4 and switch off the High ISO speed noise reduction.

Canon 450D Tip 3: AE lock
By default, this button locks the current exposure setting. But did you know that you can shift the aperture (in Av mode) or shutter speed (in Tv mode), and the camera changes the opposite setting to retain the same exposure?

Canon 450D Tip 4: WB bracketing
In the second red Shooting menu, you’ll find WB SHIFT/ BKT. The white balance bracketing option is dead useful when you’re shooting JPEGs in tricky lighting: for each picture taken, the camera saves three different versions.

    Canon 450D Tip 5: A-DEP mode
Useful for landscape photography, this mode automatically sets an aperture that gives enough depth of field to keep both close and distant subjects sharp. Just ensure that all elements you want in focus are covered by an AF point.
