If you’re looking for inspirational photography, Digital Camera magazine features ‘Hot Shots’ from our gallery each issue. Here are the fantastic images that were chosen for issue 123.

Girl with Green Eyes – David Lazar, Australia

“In the small town of Putia, Bangladesh, I came across a group of friends playing games. I arranged to meet this girl and her family the next day, and I was welcomed into their home. I shot this in the afternoon using natural light. Back home, I enhanced the natural highlights and shadows, took some colour out of the background and sharpened selectively using a high-pass filter.”

    Nikon D700 with Nikon AF 24-85mm f/2.8-4 at 50mm; ISO400; 1/30 sec at f/3.5

National Monument – Pakistan Zill Niazi, UK

“I took this picture on an overcast evening in the hope of capturing some unusual colours. The place is always thronging with crowds, but I decided to mount my camera on a tripod and place it where people could not walk right in front of the camera. I didn’t have much time, as the sky was getting darker, but I managed to take a few shots.”

    Nikon D5000 with Nikon AF-S DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR at 18mm; ISO100; 4 secs at f/13

Children’s Kenya – Paolo Scarano, Italy

“In 2010 I went to Kenya for the non-profit organisation For Life. I visited schools, the hospital in Malindi and facilities for disabled children. the look on the face of this child made this shot. I was photographing another child when he sat down opposite me and looked me straight in the eye. I had the feeling it was just me and this beautiful angel in the room.”

    Nikon D700 with Nikon AF-S 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR at 28mm; ISO1250; 1/40 sec at f/3.5

The Power of Steam – Karen Oliver, UK

“I wanted to capture the power of the water coolers and how their steam dominated the night sky. Post-shoot, I used Photoshop to process the image, adding a texture and using brushes to create an acid burn effect around the steam. I then added a vignette to create a dramatic frame.”

Canon EOS 5D Mark II with Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM at 35mm; ISO100; 4 mins at f/11

Hidden Treasure – Guy Richardson, UK

“I wanted to capture a sense of this hidden location on the Isle of skye. I used a slower shutter speed to capture the movement of the waterfall and also used a circular polariser to reduce the reflections. Later, I boosted the contrast and increased the saturation slightly.”

    Nikon D70 with Tokina AT-X Pro SD 12-24mm f/4 at 16mm; ISO200; 1.3 secs at f/22

Matterhorn at Sunrise – Dana Underwood, USA

“We had been told that we had a view of the Matterhorn from our hotel room, and after a snowstorm broke our doubts were erased. this was the scene at sunrise, and I just wanted to do it justice. the Matterhorn seems to rise right out of the village of Zermatt. I shot handheld and adjusted the contrast in Photoshop Lightroom.”

Canon EOS 5D Mark II with Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM at 110mm; ISO400; 1/60 sec at f/5
