RIP Eve Arnold
Eve Arnold, a towering figure in American portrait photography, passed away this week at the grand old age of 99. Arnold was chiefly famous for her images of Marilyn Monroe, but also photographed many other celebrities, including characters as diverse as Joan Crawford, Malcolm X and Margaret Thatcher. She was also famed for her perceptive quotes on photography – “if a photographer cares about the people before the lens and is compassionate, much is given. It is the photographer, not the camera, that is the instrument.” Her words still ring very true in our technology-obsessed age.
